Shreyas Iyer’s hopes of a Test return have been dashed, as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially ruled him out of the upcoming Test series against Bangladesh and the Australian tour later this year. The decision comes after a series of disappointing performances and ongoing injury issues that have plagued the talented right-hander’s 2024 season.
Iyer, who had an outstanding ODI World Cup 2023 with 530 runs at an average of 66.25 and a strike rate of 113.24, has struggled to recapture his form since then. His 2024 campaign has been marred by a back injury and a noticeable decline in performance. Adding to his woes, Iyer was dropped from the BCCI central contract list following his withdrawal from Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy game, further complicating his return to the national team.
Iyer had pinned his hopes on making a comeback through strong performances in the Duleep Trophy 2024. However, his efforts have been underwhelming. In the two games he played for India D, he managed only 104 runs in four innings, including a duck. This lack of form has led the BCCI to exclude him from the 16-member squad for the Test series against Bangladesh, which begins on September 19 at M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
A BCCI official, speaking to The Telegraph, emphasized that Iyer’s current form and poor shot selection have been significant factors in the decision. “There’s no room for Shreyas in the Test team right now. His shot selection has been concerning, especially in the Duleep Trophy. When you are set and batting on a flat deck, you need to make the most of that opportunity,” the official stated.
The upcoming Test series against Bangladesh is a crucial one for India, not only for gaining World Test Championship (WTC) points but also as a preparation for a busy schedule ahead, including the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. India’s squad for this series features a mix of seasoned players and emerging talents, while Iyer’s absence highlights the selectors’ current priorities.
Despite the setback, there is still a glimmer of hope for Iyer. He could potentially make a return to domestic cricket in the Irani Cup, starting October 1, and if he performs well there, he might be considered for the T20Is against Bangladesh or the Ranji Trophy later in the year. The BCCI official added that if Iyer regains form, he could still be in the mix for future selections.
As India gears up for the Test series and a packed season ahead, the focus will be on how the team performs under the new leadership of Gautam Gambhir and his coaching staff. For Iyer, the road back to the Indian Test team will require significant effort and form restoration.
