West Indies fast bowler Shannon Gabriel has announced his retirement from international cricket at the age of 36. Over his 12-year career, Gabriel became known as a fearsome pacer who made his mark primarily in Test cricket. His retirement marks the end of an era for West Indies cricket, as Gabriel leaves behind a legacy of dedication, power, and resilience.
Gabriel made 86 international appearances for the West Indies, with the majority of his contributions coming in Test matches. He played 59 Tests, taking 166 wickets, including a career-best performance of 8/62. Gabriel’s ability to hit the deck hard and extract seam movement made him a formidable opponent on any surface. He formed a potent new-ball partnership with Kemar Roach, terrorizing batsmen around the world with his pace and aggression.
Gabriel made his Test debut against England at Lord’s in 2012, but his most memorable performance came six years later against Sri Lanka at Gros Islet. In that match, Gabriel recorded his best-ever figures, taking 8/62 and securing a 13-wicket haul across the two innings. This achievement places him among the greats of West Indies cricket, with his match figures being the fourth-best by a West Indies bowler, behind legends like Michael Holding and Courtney Walsh.
Despite his successes, Gabriel’s career had its share of challenges. He was involved in a controversial moment in 2017 when he was bowled by Yasir Shah with just seven balls left in a Test against Pakistan, leading to a heartbreaking loss for the West Indies. Additionally, in 2019, he was banned for four ODIs following an on-field altercation with Joe Root, where he was accused of using a homophobic slur.
Gabriel’s final Test appearance came at his home ground in Trinidad in July 2022, where he took the wicket of India’s captain Rohit Sharma. Unfortunately, rain washed out the final day, and the match ended in a draw.
In his retirement announcement on social media, Gabriel expressed his deep gratitude to everyone who supported him throughout his career. He thanked Cricket West Indies administrators, coaches, staff, teammates, and fans for their unwavering support. Gabriel also shared his future plans, stating that he will continue to play for Trinidad and Tobago and be available for franchise cricket around the world.
