Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman has signed with the Melbourne Renegades for the 2026-27 Big Bash League (BBL) season, marking his first appearance in Australia’s premier domestic T20 competition.
The left-arm pacer, widely known as “The Fizz,” will join the Renegades for BBL|16 as the club strengthens its bowling attack following an injury to Australian fast bowler Jason Behrendorff. Mustafizur brings extensive international and franchise T20 experience to the Melbourne-based side.
The upcoming BBL season will be Mustafizur’s first in the tournament. He is set to become the third Bangladesh cricketer to feature in the Big Bash League, following Shakib Al Hasan and Rishad Hossain.
The Renegades confirmed the signing, describing the Bangladesh international as a proven T20 wicket-taker. The 31-year-old has taken more than 400 wickets in T20 cricket around the world, using his left-arm pace, cutters and slower deliveries to trouble batters.
Mustafizur’s arrival is an important addition for Melbourne after Jason Behrendorff was ruled out of BBL|16 following shoulder surgery.
Renegades head coach Luke Ronchi highlighted Mustafizur’s ability to take wickets during both the Powerplay and the death overs. His variations and experience in high-pressure T20 matches are expected to strengthen the team’s pace-bowling options.
The Bangladesh quick will join international recruits Jonny Bairstow of England and Michael Bracewell of New Zealand in the Renegades’ squad.
Mustafizur has played in several major franchise competitions, including the Indian Premier League (IPL), Pakistan Super League (PSL), Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), International League T20 (ILT20), Lanka Premier League and England’s Vitality Blast.
His experience across different leagues could prove valuable for the Renegades, particularly in the latter stages of innings when bowlers are required to contain aggressive batters.
The left-arm seamer has also represented Bangladesh in international cricket for more than a decade and remains one of the country’s leading pace-bowling options.
Mustafizur is expected to miss the Renegades’ opening fixture because of his commitments with Dubai Capitals in the ILT20. He will join the Melbourne squad after completing those obligations.
The franchise has also announced a fan initiative called “The Fizz Bay” for its MCG home games on January 1 and January 16, celebrating the Bangladesh pacer’s arrival and the club’s connection with Melbourne’s Bangladeshi community.
Mustafizur’s signing adds international experience and a distinctive bowling style to the Melbourne Renegades’ attack. His ability to use cutters and slower balls could make him especially useful on Australian pitches, where teams often rely on effective death bowling to control high-scoring matches.
For Bangladesh cricket fans, his BBL debut also adds another player to the country’s growing presence in overseas franchise leagues.
