The wait is almost over! The ICC T20 World Cup kicks off on June 2nd, 2024, with the United States taking on Canada in the opening match. As the world’s number one ranked T20 team, India is definitely geared up to challenge for the coveted trophy.
This year’s edition of the T20 World Cup is the biggest one yet, featuring 20 teams contesting for glory. Defending champions England, led by Jos Buttler, and 50-over World Cup champions Australia, captained by Mitch Marsh, will be among the strong contenders.
India’s T20 World Cup Journey
India’s campaign starts on June 5th against Ireland at the newly built Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York. The much-anticipated clash against arch-rivals Pakistan is set for June 9th. They will then face tournament co-hosts USA (June 12th) and Canada (June 15th) to complete their Group A fixtures.
Aiming to End the Trophy Drought
India will be looking to break their recent string of near misses in major ICC tournaments. Since winning the Champions Trophy in 2013, they’ve reached the finals of the 50-over World Cup (2023), World Test Championship (2021 & 2023), and T20 World Cup (2014), but haven’t been able to secure the big prize. This time, their sights are firmly set on reclaiming the T20 World Cup crown, which they first won in 2007.
