Best Bowling Figures in An Innings in ICC Men’s T20 World Cup

The T20 World Cup is a tournament where not just batsmen steal the show. Exceptional bowling performances can turn the tide of a match, leaving a lasting impression. This article dives into the bowlers who have etched their names in history with the best bowling figures (most wickets taken in a single innings) in the T20 World Cup.

Ajantha Mendis

At the top of the list sits Sri Lanka’s mystery spinner, Ajantha Mendis. Back in the 2012 edition of the tournament, Mendis unleashed a spell of pure magic against Zimbabwe. He bamboozled the batsmen with his variations, taking an incredible 6 wickets in just 4 overs! Giving away only 8 runs, Mendis single-handedly restricted Zimbabwe to a very low score, making a significant contribution to Sri Lanka’s victory. This phenomenal performance still stands as the best bowling figures in the history of the T20 World Cup.

Rangana Herath

Another Sri Lankan spinner, Rangana Herath, claims the number two spot. Often overshadowed by other greats, Herath showcased his talent in the 2014 World Cup. Bowling with exceptional control against New Zealand, he took 5 wickets in a mere 3.3 overs!  Conceding just 3 runs, Herath completely dominated the Black Caps’ batting line-up, proving that spin can be just as devastating as pace in the T20 format.

Umar Gul

Pakistan’s pace spearhead, Umar Gul, rounds out the top three with his impressive performance in the 2009 World Cup. Though he didn’t play in many T20 World Cups, Gul made a lasting impact when given the opportunity. In a match against New Zealand, he displayed his exceptional bowling skills by taking a crucial 5-wicket haul. His economical spell of just 3 overs and 6 runs conceded helped Pakistan restrict New Zealand and secure victory.

These bowlers have not only showcased their individual brilliance but have also highlighted the importance of variations and strategic bowling in T20 cricket.  Their phenomenal performances serve as an inspiration for young bowlers, proving that with skill and dedication, they too can leave their mark on the biggest stage. The upcoming T20 World Cup promises to be another exciting display of cricketing prowess, and it will be interesting to see if new bowlers emerge to challenge these records.
