On February 28, 2024, the BCCI unveiled the Annual Player Contracts for Team India Men for the 2023-24 season, spanning from October 1st, 2023, to September 30th, 2024.
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have maintained their positions in the prestigious Grade A+ category. These players occupied the top tier last year, and their continued presence at the pinnacle is expected. Being in the top bracket translates to worthy salaries for Virat and Rohit, with each of them earning Rs 7 crore annually. This figure does not encompass the match fees received by players.
The match fee structure for Indian players stands at Rs 15 lakh for a Test match, Rs 6 lakhs per One Day International (ODI), and Rs 3 lakhs for a T20 International (T20I). In addition to Virat and Rohit, Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja have also secured positions in the Grade A+ category, with each set to draw a salary of Rs 7 crore.
The highest category comprises players actively participating in all three cricket formats. Notably, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have recently made their returns to T20 International (T20I) cricket. Jay Shah has already confirmed Rohit Sharma as the captain of Team India in the upcoming 2024 T20 World Cup. In addition to the annual salary provided by the BCCI, players are entitled to match fees for each appearance in Test, One Day International (ODI), and T20I matches.
Players in Grade A are entitled to an annual salary of Rs 5 crore, while those in Grade B earn Rs 3 crore, and Grade C players receive a salary of Rs 1 crore. In the current contract cycle, the BCCI has bestowed Grade A contracts upon six players, expanding the list to include R Ashwin and Hardik Pandya. Ashwin is primarily considered for Test matches, while Hardik specializes in white-ball cricket.
Grade B contracts have been assigned to five players, with Rishabh Pant transitioning from Grade A, which he held the previous year. The Grade C contracts have been extended to a total of 15 players.
There is also an opportunity for Sarfaraz Khan and Dhruv Jurel to move up to Grade C if they participate in the Dharamsala Test match against England. This tiered contract system reflects the BCCI’s recognition of players’ roles and contributions across different formats of the game.
