Mumbai Indians head coach Kieron Pollard believes Naman Dhir has the potential to build a successful career but says the young all-rounder still has plenty to learn and achieve. Pollard has praised Dhir’s development since joining Mumbai Indians in 2024, highlighting his willingness to adapt, listen to coaches and work hard on his game.
Dhir has recently impressed for India during the T20I series against New Zealand, producing impactful performances with the bat in challenging overseas conditions. His progress has strengthened his reputation as a versatile player who can contribute in the lower middle order and provide additional bowling options when required.
Pollard said Mumbai Indians identified Dhir’s potential early and have been encouraged by how he has developed his game and grown in confidence.
The former West Indies all-rounder emphasised that Dhir remains at the beginning of his career despite his recent success. He believes the player’s willingness to learn and put in consistent effort will be important to his long-term development.
Pollard also stressed the franchise’s responsibility to provide young players with time, support and an environment in which they can improve without unnecessary pressure or unrealistic expectations.
For Mumbai Indians, the focus is not simply on short-term performances but on helping Dhir develop into a dependable player who can contribute with both bat and ball.

Dhir has made an impact during India’s ongoing T20I series against New Zealand. He scored an unbeaten 42 in the first match at a strike rate of 280 and followed it with 31 in the second T20I, striking at more than 180.
Both innings demonstrated his ability to score quickly in the lower order and make an immediate contribution when the team needs momentum.
His aggressive batting has attracted attention because India have several established options competing for middle-order and all-rounder roles. Dhir’s ability to play impactful cameos could give the team management another option when balancing the batting and bowling combinations.
Although his bowling has not yet been used extensively in the New Zealand T20Is, his potential to contribute in multiple departments remains an important part of his profile.
Dhir joined Mumbai Indians in 2024 and has worked with experienced figures within the franchise, including Pollard, former head coach Mahela Jayawardene and former captain Rohit Sharma.
Regular interaction with established players has given him opportunities to learn about batting under pressure, preparing for different match situations and managing the mental demands of professional cricket.
Dhir has also spoken about the importance of playing fearlessly while understanding the difference between positive aggression and reckless shot-making. He has credited the Mumbai Indians management with backing him and encouraging him to express himself on the field.
That support appears to have helped him become more confident in his role as a power-hitting batter.
Dhir’s recent performances have added another dimension to India’s selection options. His ability to bat at No. 6 or No. 7 and potentially contribute with the ball makes him a flexible option in the T20 format.
Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has also discussed the competition Dhir could create for established all-rounders and finishers, including Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Rinku Singh and Washington Sundar.
However, Dhir’s place in the national side will depend on continued performances, team balance and the requirements of individual matches. Sustaining his form and developing his bowling could help him strengthen his case for a longer international run.
Pollard’s comments underline Mumbai Indians’ emphasis on creating an environment in which emerging players can develop over time. Rather than placing excessive expectations on Dhir after a few successful performances, the franchise wants him to keep learning and building consistency.
With Pollard now leading the coaching setup, Mumbai Indians will hope to help Dhir turn his promise into sustained performances across formats and competitions.
The young all-rounder has already shown that he can influence games with aggressive batting. His next challenge will be to maintain that impact, improve his overall game and become a more complete cricketer.
For Pollard and Mumbai Indians, the message is clear: Dhir has made encouraging progress, but his journey is only beginning.
