New Zealand Whitewashes India in Historic Test Series Win

New Zealand etched their name in the history books by sweeping India 3-0 in a thrilling Test series at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. The Black Caps defended a modest target of 147 on Sunday, bowling out the hosts for just 121 runs on a challenging, spinning wicket. This monumental victory marked the first time India has suffered a whitewash in a home series of at least three Tests, and New Zealand accomplished it without their star player, Kane Williamson.

New Zealand’s Unlikely Triumph

The Black Caps arrived in India off a tough 2-0 series defeat in Sri Lanka. Against all odds, they managed to secure a historic clean sweep over a formidable Indian side that had won 18 consecutive home series since 2012. The final Test in Mumbai was a nerve-racking affair. After trailing by 28 runs in the first innings, New Zealand bounced back to win by 25 runs.

New Zealand’s spinners played a pivotal role in this victory. Ajaz Patel delivered a stellar performance, picking up 6-57 in India’s second innings, while part-time bowler Glenn Phillips chipped in with three wickets. Their relentless bowling attack left India’s top order in tatters.

India’s Struggles and Collapse

India’s captain, Rohit Sharma, was the first to fall, top-edging a short ball from Matt Henry for 11. Shubman Gill misjudged a delivery from Patel, and Virat Kohli was dismissed for just 1, caught at slip. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sarfaraz Khan both fell cheaply, contributing to India’s dramatic collapse, losing five wickets for 16 runs.

Rishabh Pant was the lone warrior, scoring a gritty 64 and forming a brief 42-run partnership with Ravindra Jadeja. However, his dismissal, following a clever plan from Patel, signaled the end for India. The tailenders offered minimal resistance, sealing a famous win for New Zealand.

Mitchell and Ajaz Shine

Daryl Mitchell’s contributions with the bat were crucial, as his 82 in the first innings was the game’s highest score. Reflecting on the win, Mitchell called it a “dream come true,” praising the team’s discipline and strategy on a spinning wicket.

Ajaz Patel, named Player of the Match for his 11 wickets in Mumbai, emphasized the importance of rhythm and adaptability in spin bowling.

Impact on World Test Championship

New Zealand’s emphatic victory has boosted their chances of making the World Test Championship final, while India’s road to qualification has become more challenging. With a grueling series against Australia next on the horizon, India will need to regroup and address their vulnerabilities.

This series win for New Zealand isn’t just a triumph but a testament to their fighting spirit and ability to compete at the highest level, even against the toughest of opponents.
