New Zealand Wins 1st Test in India after 36 years

In a match that will be etched into cricketing folklore, New Zealand scripted history by defeating India by eight wickets in the first Test at Bengaluru. This victory marked the end of a 36-year wait for a Test win on Indian soil, a feat that had eluded them despite numerous attempts.

India’s Shocking Collapse

The match began on a disastrous note for India. Batting first on a pitch that had been under covers for days, the Indian batsmen were completely outplayed by the New Zealand pace attack. Matt Henry and William O’Rourke wreaked havoc, combining pace, swing, and seam to bowl India out for a paltry 46 runs. It was India’s third-lowest total in Test history and their lowest at home.

New Zealand Dominates

In stark contrast, New Zealand’s batting was a masterclass. Devon Conway provided a solid start, while Rachin Ravindra, playing his first Test in India, scored a magnificent century. The Kiwis declared their first innings at 402 runs, setting up a daunting target for India.

India’s Fightback

Despite the mountain to climb, India fought back valiantly in their second innings. Captain Rohit Sharma led the way with a half-century, and Virat Kohli, who had been dismissed for a duck in the first innings, contributed a valuable 70 runs. Sarfaraz Khan, in his maiden Test century, played a crucial role, scoring a 150. However, India’s lower order crumbled under pressure, and they were eventually bowled out for 462.

New Zealand Seals the Deal

Chasing a modest target of 107 to win, New Zealand started the final day cautiously, losing an early wicket. However, Will Young and Rachin Ravindra, who had already impressed in the first innings, steadied the ship and guided New Zealand to victory. Their unbeaten partnership of 72 runs sealed the deal for the Kiwis.

Key Moments

  • India’s Collapse: India’s first innings total of 46 was their lowest at home in Test cricket.
  • Ravindra’s Century: Rachin Ravindra scored a century in his first Test in India.
  • Sarfaraz’s Maiden Ton: Sarfaraz Khan’s maiden Test century gave India a glimmer of hope.
  • New Zealand’s Chase: Will Young and Rachin Ravindra’s unbeaten partnership ensured New Zealand’s victory.

Historical Significance

This victory will be remembered as one of the most significant moments in New Zealand’s cricketing history. It not only ended their long drought in India but also showcased their ability to compete at the highest level against any opposition.

The series now moves to Kanpur for the second Test, where India will be eager to bounce back and level the series.
