New Zealand Legend Neil Wagner Announces Retirement

Veteran New Zealand left-arm fast bowler Neil Wagner has announced his retirement from international cricket at the age of 37. The decision comes after Wagner was informed by the selectors that he wouldn’t be part of the upcoming 2-Test series against Australia.

This wasn’t an easy choice for Wagner, who shared an emotional announcement at a press conference at Basin Reserve in Wellington alongside coach Gary Stead. While initially included in the squad for the first Test, now that he’s no longer a part of the squad, Wagner ultimately decided it was the right time to step away from the international stage.

His last Test appearance came against South Africa on February 16 2024 in Hamilton. Wagner’s career spanned over 12 years, starting in 2012 against the West Indies. During this remarkable journey, Wagner put on the black cap for New Zealand in 64 Test matches. He leaves behind a legacy of 260 wickets, an impressive average of 27.57, and a lightning-fast bowling strike rate of just 52.7.

Wagner’s retirement marks the end of an era for New Zealand cricket. He finishes his career as the fifth-highest wicket-taker in New Zealand’s Test history. While he will continue playing first-class cricket, he feels the time has come to move on from the Test arena.
