India all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja created a buzz on social media after reacting to the BCCI’s announcement about the vacant chief selector position.
Following the end of Ajit Agarkar’s tenure as chairman of the men’s senior selection committee, the BCCI invited applications for the post. Jadeja responded to the board’s vacancy announcement on X with a cheeky question: “What’s the procedure?”
The comment quickly attracted attention, with fans wondering whether the veteran all-rounder could actually be considering a move into India’s selection setup.
However, Jadeja’s response appears to have been made in jest. Under the current eligibility rules, an active cricketer cannot take up a position on the selection committee.
Jadeja’s comment came shortly after the BCCI officially opened applications for the vacant chief selector position.
The vacancy was created following Agarkar’s departure after more than three years in the role. Agarkar’s tenure formally ended on October 4, 2026, and Pragyan Ojha is currently serving as interim chairman of the men’s selection committee.
Jadeja, who is known for rarely posting on X, responded directly to the BCCI’s announcement.
His short comment sparked considerable discussion because the 37-year-old remains an active international cricketer.
No, not at present.
BCCI eligibility rules prevent an active player from becoming a selector or taking up certain administrative positions within Indian cricket.
For the chief selector role, an applicant must have retired from all forms of cricket for at least five years, in addition to meeting the required playing-experience criteria. Jadeja has retired from T20I cricket but continues to play other formats, meaning he does not currently satisfy the retirement requirement.
Therefore, his social-media comment should not be interpreted as an actual application for the position.
Agarkar became chairman of India’s senior men’s selection committee in 2023 and oversaw several major changes in the national team.
During his tenure, India won the 2024 T20 World Cup, 2025 Champions Trophy and 2026 T20 World Cup. He was also involved in the transition following the T20I retirements of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja after India’s 2024 T20 World Cup triumph.
His departure has now opened an important vacancy at the BCCI, with the board beginning the process of finding his successor.
Jadeja’s comment also attracted attention because of his previous selection experiences during Agarkar’s tenure.
The all-rounder was left out of India’s ODI squads for tours involving Sri Lanka in 2024 and Australia in 2025. At the time, however, Agarkar had continued to describe Jadeja as an important part of India’s ODI plans.
There has been no confirmed evidence of an open dispute between the two former teammates.
Jadeja had previously expressed his desire to continue playing for India when discussing selection decisions, while acknowledging that squad selection ultimately rests with the selectors and team management.
With Agarkar’s departure, Pragyan Ojha has taken over as interim chairman.
The other members of the current men’s selection committee include:
The BCCI is now looking for Agarkar’s permanent replacement.
The new chairman will inherit an important role as India prepares for the next phase of its international cricket calendar and continues planning towards the 2027 ODI World Cup.
While the selector joke generated plenty of discussion, Jadeja remains focused on his playing career.
The all-rounder retired from T20I cricket after India’s 2024 T20 World Cup victory but has continued his career in other formats. He remains one of India’s most experienced all-rounders and a major name in domestic and franchise cricket.
The fact that he is still an active player means a move into the BCCI selection committee is not possible under the current rules.
Jadeja’s “What’s the procedure?” comment should therefore be viewed as a light-hearted response rather than a serious application for the BCCI chief selector position.
The timing, however, made the post particularly interesting. It came immediately after Agarkar’s exit and the BCCI’s announcement seeking applications for the vacant position.
For now, Jadeja remains a player rather than a selector, while the BCCI works through the formal process of appointing Agarkar’s successor.
