Jasprit Bumrah, the hero of India’s triumphant T20 World Cup campaign, has added another feather to his cap by clinching the ICC Men’s Player of the Month award for June.
Bumrah was a force to be reckoned with throughout the tournament, earning him both the Player of the Tournament title and now the Player of the Month honours. He faced stiff competition from his Indian teammate Rohit Sharma and Afghanistan’s rising star Rahmanullah Gurbaz, but his exceptional bowling secured him the top spot.
The 30-year-old pacer was a rock in India’s bowling attack, taking an impressive 15 wickets at a miserly average of just 8.26 runs per wicket. Even more remarkable was his economy rate of 4.17 runs per over, showcasing his ability to restrict the flow of runs.
With this win, Bumrah joins Virat Kohli as the only other Indian cricketer to claim both the Player of the Tournament and Player of the Month awards in a T20 World Cup.
Bumrah’s dominance started early in the tournament. He kicked things off with a stellar 3-wicket haul for just 6 runs against Ireland and followed it up with a match-winning performance against arch-rivals Pakistan, grabbing 3 crucial wickets for only 14 runs. While he didn’t pick up any wickets against the USA, he bounced back even stronger in the Super Eights stage, taking a total of 6 wickets in just 3 matches. His brilliance continued in the knockout stages, where he scalped 2 wickets each in the semi-final against England and the final against South Africa, effectively shutting down the opposition’s batting line-up.
Bumrah, ever humble, dedicated the award to his family, teammates, and the fans. Upon receiving the award, Bumrah paid tribute to his family and the other two nominees.
“I am delighted to be named the ICC Men’s Player of the Month for June. It’s a special honour for me following a memorable few weeks spent in the USA and West Indies. We have had a lot to celebrate as a team, and I’m delighted to be able to add this personal accolade to the list.
“To perform as well as we did at the tournament and lift the trophy at the end is incredibly special, and I will carry those memories with me forever. I wish to congratulate my captain Rohit Sharma and Rahmanullah Gurbaz for their excellent performances in the same period, and I am humbled to have been chosen as the winner.
“Finally, I want to thank my family, all of my teammates and coaches as well as the fans wo have voted for me. Their support pushes me to compete at the best of my ability in national colours.”
This win undoubtedly adds to the unforgettable memories of India’s T20 World Cup victory, and Bumrah’s contribution to the team’s success is undeniable.
