Rohit Sharma Makes History for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2024

Rohit Sharma, the captain of the Mumbai Indians (MI), became the first player in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL) to score two centuries (100+ runs) for the same team – the Mumbai Indians! This incredible feat happened on Sunday, April 14th, during MI’s sixth match of the season against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

A long-time MI player since 2011, Rohit opened the batting for his team and stayed unbeaten throughout the innings. He faced 63 balls and smashed a brilliant 105 runs, including 11 fours and 5 sixes. Unfortunately, despite his outstanding performance, MI fell short by 20 runs while chasing CSK’s target.

This wasn’t Rohit’s first century for MI. Back in 2012, he scored an unbeaten 109 against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

Rohit’s knock on Sunday wasn’t just about the century – it was packed with other records too!  By hitting five sixes, he became the first Indian batsman to ever reach 500 sixes in Twenty20 cricket. With a total of 502 sixes in 432 matches, he’s now among the top six hitters in the world, following legends like Chris Gayle and Kieron Pollard.

He also broke another record – becoming the highest run scorer in matches between MI and CSK in the entire IPL history.  Before this match, he needed just five runs to surpass Suresh Raina’s record of 736 runs. Now, Rohit holds the title with a whopping 736 runs and 101 more than Raina!

This century also boosted Rohit’s position in the IPL 2024 scorers’ list.  He’s currently at number four with 261 runs in six matches. Virat Kohli leads the race with 319 runs, followed by Rajasthan Royals’ Riyan Parag (284) and Sanju Samson (264).

With his record-breaking performance, Rohit Sharma has not only cemented his place as a legend in the IPL but also proven his batting prowess yet again. It will be exciting to see if he can continue his dominant form and help MI climb the ranks in the ongoing IPL season.
