Yashasvi Jaiswal Dethrones King Kohli for most runs in a Test series

Yashasvi Jaiswal, India’s young batting prodigy, has been on fire in the ongoing Test series against England.  His brilliant fifty in the 1st inning of the fifth Test at Dharamsala ensured a strong start for the home team. Jaiswal, who only made his debut last year, has wasted no time proving his talent. He already boasts five three-figure scores, including two impressive double centuries.

Jaiswal’s knock wasn’t just impressive, it was historic. He smashed a record-breaking 700 runs in the series, becoming only the second Indian batsman after Sunil Gavaskar to achieve this feat. This accomplishment dethroned Virat Kohli’s previous record of 692 runs for most runs in a Test series.

Jaiswal is now even chasing Gavaskar’s all-time record for most runs in a single Test series, with a chance to surpass the legendary batsman’s 774 runs if he can perform well in the remaining innings. Gavaskar had scored more than 700 runs in a single Test series twice during his career, both against the West Indies – 774 (1971/72) and 732 (1978-79).

Jaiswal smashed a 58-ball 57 runs before he fell to Shoaib Bashir, becoming the second quickest Indian to score 1000 runs in Test cricket (16 innings), after Vinod Kambli, who accomplished the same in 14 innings.

Jaiswal’s knock was part of a dominant Indian performance on the first day. The bowlers, led by Kuldeep Yadav’s impressive five-wicket haul, restricted England to just 218 runs. At the end of the first day’s play in Dharamsala, Rohit (52*) stood in the middle alongside Shubman Gill (26*).
