India Shatter T20I World Record, Reach 100 Runs in Just Five Overs Against New Zealand

India produced a remarkable batting display against New Zealand in the third T20 International, setting multiple world records during their successful chase of 199 runs on October 27, 2026. The Indian team reached 100 runs in just five overs, registering the fastest team hundred in men’s T20I cricket.

The explosive start was led by Abhishek Sharma and young opener Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who attacked New Zealand’s bowling attack from the opening over. Their aggressive approach helped India reach the 50-run mark in just 2.2 overs before taking the scoring rate to another level.

India eventually chased down New Zealand’s total of 198 for three in 13.2 overs, winning by six wickets and taking an unassailable 3–0 lead in the five-match series.

India Set New Record for Fastest Team Hundred in T20Is

India’s achievement in reaching 100 runs in five overs established a new world record in men’s T20 International cricket. The previous record belonged to Romania, who reached the hundred-run mark in 5.2 overs against Serbia in 2021.

Before India’s extraordinary performance, South Africa held the record among Test-playing nations, having reached 100 runs in 5.3 overs against the West Indies.

India’s record-breaking start demonstrated the impact of aggressive opening partnerships in modern T20 cricket. The batters maintained a remarkable scoring rate while putting the opposition bowlers under immediate pressure.

The milestone became one of the defining moments of India’s emphatic victory in Wellington.

Abhishek Sharma Scores a 15-Ball Half-Century

Abhishek Sharma was at the centre of India’s extraordinary start, reaching his half-century in just 15 deliveries. His aggressive stroke play put New Zealand on the defensive and helped India equal the world record for the fastest team fifty in men’s T20Is.

India reached 50 runs in 2.2 overs, matching the record previously achieved by Papua New Guinea against Vanuatu and Romania against Serbia.

Abhishek continued attacking after reaching his half-century, striking boundaries and sixes against multiple New Zealand bowlers. His ability to score quickly without allowing the required run rate to become a concern transformed the chase into a dominant batting performance.

He eventually scored 113 runs off 38 balls, completing his century in just 35 deliveries.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Provides Explosive Support

Young batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi played an equally important role in India’s record-breaking start. Opening alongside Abhishek, he scored 45 runs from only 19 deliveries.

The left-handed batter attacked from the first over, helping India establish momentum immediately. His aggressive approach complemented Abhishek’s innings and prevented New Zealand from settling into a consistent bowling rhythm.

The opening pair added 133 runs in just 43 deliveries before both batters were dismissed. Their partnership gave India a commanding position in the chase and left the remaining batters with a relatively straightforward task.

The partnership also demonstrated how fearless batting at the top of the order can change the course of a T20 International.

India Break the Record for Highest Powerplay Score

India’s extraordinary scoring continued throughout the first six overs. The team reached 118 without losing a wicket during the Powerplay, setting a new record for the highest Powerplay total in men’s T20 Internationals.

The previous benchmark was 116 runs without losing a wicket, scored by Romania against Serbia in 2021.

India’s total of 118 surpassed that mark while also giving the team a decisive advantage in the chase. The opening batters combined powerful hitting with consistent boundary scoring to keep New Zealand’s bowlers under pressure.

The record-breaking Powerplay proved decisive, as India needed only another 81 runs from the remaining 14 overs to complete the chase.

New Zealand’s 198 for Three Proves Insufficient

Earlier, New Zealand scored 198 for three in their allotted 20 overs after being asked to bat first.

Daryl Mitchell led the innings with an unbeaten 89 from 52 deliveries. Finn Allen contributed 40 runs, while Bevon Jacobs remained unbeaten on 39 to help the hosts establish a competitive total.

New Zealand appeared to have enough runs to challenge India, but the visitors’ explosive opening partnership quickly changed the match.

The home side struggled to contain the Indian batters during the opening overs, and the early scoring surge left their bowlers with little room to recover.

India Take an Unassailable Lead in the Series

The six-wicket victory gave India a 3–0 lead in the five-match T20I series, ensuring that New Zealand could no longer win the series.

India had already won the first two matches by four wickets each. The third encounter was particularly memorable because of the number of records established during the chase.

The teams were scheduled to meet again in Auckland on October 30, followed by the fifth T20I in Hamilton on November 1.

India will look to maintain their winning momentum, while New Zealand will aim to respond after a difficult defeat on home soil.
