Varun Chakravarthy Makes a Remarkable Return to India’s T20I

In a remarkable return to international cricket, Varun Chakravarthy made a significant impact during India’s first T20I against Bangladesh in Gwalior on Sunday. Describing his comeback as a “rebirth,” Chakravarthy showcased his skills as a leg-spinner by taking three wickets for 31 runs, helping India secure a comfortable seven-wicket victory with 49 balls to spare.

Chakravarthy, who last played T20Is in 2021, demonstrated why he is regarded as a mystery spinner. His performance played a crucial role in bowling out Bangladesh for just 127 runs in 19.5 overs. Alongside him, left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh was also in exceptional form, picking up three wickets for only 14 runs. Together, they effectively dismantled Bangladesh’s batting lineup, which struggled to build momentum throughout their innings.

India won the toss and opted to bowl first in Gwalior, which hosted its first international match since 2010. The team included two debutants: pace bowler Mayank Yadav and all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy. The decision to field first paid off as Singh struck early, dismissing Parvez Hossain Emon and Litton Das for low scores. Skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto top-scored for Bangladesh with 27 runs, but their innings fell apart when Chakravarthy entered the attack. He dismissed Towhid Hridoy, Jaker Ali, and Rishad Hossain, marking his best return in T20 cricket to date.

In an emotional interview with former spinner Murali Kartik after the match, Chakravarthy expressed his joy at returning to the Indian team. He reflected on the challenges he faced during his absence from international cricket, including injuries and missed opportunities. His performance not only marked a personal milestone, as he became the third Indian to take three wickets on his T20I return, but he also reached 100 wickets in T20 cricket overall, achieving this in just 88 matches.

Chakravarthy’s resurgence follows an impressive domestic season. In the IPL 2024, he was instrumental in leading the Kolkata Knight Riders to victory, taking 21 wickets in 14 matches and finishing as the tournament’s second-highest wicket-taker. He also excelled in the Tamil Nadu Premier League, helping the Dindigul Dragons clinch the title under the captaincy of Ravichandran Ashwin.

In the chase, India completed the task comfortably, reaching 132 for 3 in 11.5 overs. Hardik Pandya was the star of the innings with a blistering 39 runs off just 16 balls, while skipper Suryakumar Yadav and Sanju Samson contributed valuable runs. The victory not only gave India a 1-0 lead in the three-match series but also showcased the potential of their returning players.

Chakravarthy’s comeback is particularly notable, as he missed 86 T20Is, the second-most between two appearances for India, only behind pacer Khaleel Ahmed. As he settles back into the team, fans and selectors alike will be eager to see how he continues to develop and contribute in the upcoming matches. With the second T20I scheduled for October 9 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, the spotlight will undoubtedly remain on this talented spinner.
