Virat Kohli Sets Record for Most Catches in T20 Cricket by an Indian Fielder

Virat Kohli, the star batsman of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), added another remarkable achievement to his name during their IPL 2024 match against Punjab Kings. Playing at his home ground, the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, Kohli became the Indian cricketer with the most catches in T20 history.

This impressive feat came during a crucial moment in the match. In the third over, bowler Mohammed Siraj sent down a delivery that Jonny Bairstow, the Punjab Kings batsman, aimed to hit over mid-off. However, the ball ended up going straight to mid-wicket, where Kohli, who was positioned at mid-wicket, showcasing his signature athleticism & exceptional fielding skills, ran in and grabbed the catch, despite Glenn Maxwell‘s presence at mid-off. This dismissal not only put pressure on the Punjab Kings innings but also marked a significant milestone for Kohli’s career.

By taking this catch, Kohli surpassed the record previously held by former Indian cricketer Suresh Raina. The record now stands at 173 catches for Kohli, solidifying his position as a complete cricketer – not just a master with the bat, but also a dependable fielder.

This achievement comes on the heels of another milestone Kohli reached earlier in the season. During the opening match against Chennai Super Kings, he became the first Indian batsman to score a staggering 12,000 runs in T20 cricket. Kohli’s all-around performance, both with the bat and in the field, is a testament to his dedication and hard work.

Looking back at Kohli’s fielding prowess, it’s no surprise he holds this record. Over the years, he has consistently displayed exceptional reflexes and athleticism, took spectacular catches and saved boundaries. He also holds the second-highest number of catches in IPL history, with 108 grabs.

In addition to this, Kohli also leads the charts as the highest run-scorer in IPL history, with an impressive tally of 7,264 runs, including seven centuries and 50 fifties.

Kohli’s commitment to fielding, coupled with his batting prowess, makes him a truly well-rounded cricketer. This new record further solidifies his position as a legend in the world of T20 cricket.
