Shakib Al Hasan Announces Retirement from Test Cricket

In a heartfelt announcement that resonates with fans and cricket enthusiasts alike, Bangladesh’s star all-rounder, Shakib Al Hasan, has declared his intention to retire from Test cricket following the upcoming home series against South Africa. This series is set to take place in mid-October, pending security clearance. Shakib also confirmed his immediate retirement from T20 Internationals.

Shakib, one of cricket’s finest all-rounders, expressed his desire to conclude his Test career on home soil. He shared, “I’ve communicated my decision to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and the selectors, and they have agreed. We are trying to arrange everything so I can play those two Test matches, or at least the one in Mirpur, and finish my Test career there.” However, if the necessary security arrangements aren’t made for the South Africa series, his last Test might occur sooner than expected during the ongoing series against India.

Having represented Bangladesh for over 17 years in Test cricket, Shakib has accumulated impressive statistics, including 4,600 runs and over 230 wickets. The 37-year-old athlete has expressed that he is ready to make way for the younger generation, stating, “I think it is the right time to move on and create a place for the new players.

The series against South Africa remains uncertain due to security concerns following recent unrest in Bangladesh. Shakib’s decision to retire from T20Is further highlights his commitment to shaping the future of Bangladesh cricket. He noted that the 2024 T20 World Cup was his final T20 assignment, and he looks forward to seeing new talent emerge in the sport.

As Shakib prepares for his final matches, he leaves behind an extraordinary legacy. He is the only cricketer to score over 2,500 runs and take more than 100 wickets in T20Is, and he currently stands among the top five cricketers with both 240 wickets and 4,500 runs in Test matches. His contributions have been invaluable, and he has captained the national team, showcasing his leadership and skill.

While Shakib plans to continue playing in T20 franchise leagues, his imminent retirement from international cricket marks the end of an era for Bangladesh cricket. The second Test match against India, beginning on September 27 at Green Park Stadium in Kanpur, will be an opportunity for fans to witness Shakib’s immense talent one last time on an international stage. As the team faces India, currently leading the two-match series 1-0, the spotlight will undoubtedly be on Shakib, who aims to leave a lasting impact in his final appearances.
