Sarfaraz Khan Becomes 4th-Youngest Player to Score Double Century in Irani Cup

Sarfaraz Khan, the young Mumbai batter, made history on Wednesday, becoming the 4th-youngest player to score a double century in the Irani Cup. His remarkable achievement came during Mumbai’s match against Rest of India in Lucknow.

At 26 years and 346 days, Sarfaraz joined an elite club of players who have achieved this feat. His teammate, Yashasvi Jaiswal, holds the record as the youngest double-centurion in the Irani Cup at 21 years and 63 days.

Sarfaraz’s authoritative double hundred not only put Rest of India under immense pressure but also showcased his potential as a key player for Team India. His innings of 221 runs from 276 balls helped Mumbai reach a commanding total of 536/9 at the end of Day II.

The Irani Cup has witnessed several double centuries in the past, with Wasim Jaffer, Ravi Shastri, Praveen Amre, and Yashasvi Jaiswal being the other notable names. However, Sarfaraz’s achievement holds special significance as he became the first Mumbai cricketer to score a double hundred in the tournament.

This remarkable feat came amidst a challenging week for Sarfaraz. His younger brother, Musheer, was ruled out of competitive cricket for 16 weeks due to a road accident. Despite this personal setback, Sarfaraz remained focused and delivered a stellar performance.

His batting was a blend of aggression and patience, as he played 160 dot balls while maintaining a strike rate of 80. His 25 boundaries and four sixes showcased his ability to score quickly and effectively.

Sarfaraz’s 15th first-class century has further solidified his position as a potential reserve middle-order batter for the upcoming Test season. His performance will undoubtedly put pressure on KL Rahul, who has been battling for a regular spot in the Indian Test team.
