Sameer Rizvi makes a grand entry in IPL

The name Sameer Rizvi might not have been familiar to many cricket fans before this week, but the 20-year-old from Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, has well and truly announced his arrival in IPL 2024. Playing for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Rizvi turned heads with a blistering cameo against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).

 

This wasn’t just any debut – Rizvi came into bat after the departure of Shivam Dube with just 10 balls remaining and CSK needing a final push to reach a good total. Facing Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan, Rizvi showed nerves of steel. The first ball was a test, but Rizvi wasn’t fazed. He dispatched the next delivery, a full toss, with a magnificent six over backward square leg, sending the crowd and social media (now X) into a mayhem!

Rizvi wasn’t done there. He followed it up with a clever double and then displayed his fearlessness again, aiming to smash the final ball of the 19th over long-off for another six. Though he unfortunately got out trying a similar big shot in the next over, his 14 runs from just 6 balls proved to be crucial. CSK finished with a competitive 206 runs, thanks in part to Rizvi’s late fireworks. This debut has sent shivers down the spines of bowlers and has fans excited about the future of this young talent.

But Rizvi’s journey to the IPL spotlight hasn’t been overnight. He made a name for himself in the Uttar Pradesh T20 league (UPT20) last year, scoring a staggering 455 runs in just nine innings at a mind-blowing strike rate of 188.80! This explosive batting, coupled with his off-spin bowling skills, caught the eye of talent scouts.

 

Rizvi had already made his domestic debut in the prestigious Ranji Trophy in 2019 and has been steadily climbing the cricketing ladder. Known for his aggressive batting style and ability to dominate bowlers, Rizvi’s talent didn’t go unnoticed for long.  At the IPL 2024 auction, a bidding war erupted for Rizvi, with CSK eventually securing his services for INR 8.40 crore.

While his debut knock was short-lived, it was a glimpse of what Sameer Rizvi can bring to the table. With his power-hitting and fearless approach, Rizvi is sure to be a name to watch in the IPL and beyond.
