Rohit Sharma Becomes the Third Man to Score 4000 T20I Runs

Indian skipper Rohit Sharma made history on June 5, 2024, by becoming the third player to reach 4000 runs in T20 Internationals (T20Is). During India’s opening match of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 against Ireland, Sharma scored a remarkable 52 runs off 37 balls, including four fours and three sixes, at the Nassau International Stadium in New York. This milestone puts him alongside cricket legends Virat Kohli and Babar Azam.

Rohit entered the game needing just 27 runs to achieve the 4000-run mark. He reached this milestone with a well-timed shot through the off-side against Ireland’s Joshua Little in the sixth over. Rohit’s innings played a crucial role in India’s chase, as he helped secure an eight-wicket victory alongside Rishabh Pant.

India won the toss and opted to bowl first. The decision paid off as the Indian bowlers quickly dismantled the Irish batting lineup, restricting them to a total of 96 runs. Hardik Pandya was the standout bowler, taking three wickets, while Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh each claimed two wickets.

At 37 years old, Rohit has shown his leadership and skill, amassing 10,709 runs in One Day Internationals (ODIs) with an impressive average of 49.12. Despite a less stellar performance in the IPL 2024, where he scored 417 runs at an average of 32.08 and a strike rate of 150, Rohit’s determination and skill have proven crucial for India’s success.

Rohit reached the 4000-run milestone in just 152 innings, making him the fastest to achieve this feat in terms of balls faced, surpassing Virat Kohli by taking 2860 balls, 140 fewer than Kohli. Here’s the list of players who took the fewest balls to reach 4000 T20I runs:

Rohit Sharma: 2860 balls

Virat Kohli: 3000 balls

Babar Azam: 3079 balls

Rohit’s achievement also includes becoming the first player to hit 600 sixes in international cricket, and he now has 193 sixes in T20Is. Additionally, he surpassed 1000 runs in T20 World Cup history, bringing his total to 1015 runs at an average of 36.25.

Rohit Sharma’s T20I career stats are impressive, with 4026 runs at an average of 32.20 and a strike rate of 139.98, including five centuries and 30 fifties. He shares the record for the most T20I centuries with Australia’s Glenn Maxwell and has the third-most 50+ scores in T20Is, behind Babar Azam and Virat Kohli.

Rohit Sharma’s incredible journey continues to inspire cricket fans worldwide, solidifying his legacy as one of the greatest T20 players in the history of the sport.
