RCB Women Clinch Dramatic WPL Title!

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) Women have spun a magical web to clinch their maiden WPL title in a nail-biting final against Delhi Capitals!  This is a remarkable turnaround for RCB, who finished near the bottom last year. But this season belonged to them, and they capped it off in style with a sensational bowling performance, spearheaded by their incredible spin trio.

Playing XI for Delhi Capitals – Meg Lanning (Right-handed Batter), Alice Capsey (All-rounder), Marizanne Kapp (All-rounder), Jess Jonassen (Slow left-arm orthodox bowler), Arundhati Reddy (All-rounder), Radha Yadav (All-rounder), Taniya Bhatia (WK & Right-handed Batter), Minnu Mani (Off break bowler), Shikha Pandey (All-rounder), Shafali Verma (Right-handed Batter), Jemimah Rodrigues (Right-handed Batter).

Playing XI for Royal Challengers Bangalore – Smriti Mandhana (Left-handed Batter), Sophie Devine (All-rounder), Sabbhineni Meghana (Right-handed Batter), Richa Ghosh (WK & Right-handed Batter), Georgia Wareham (Leg break bowler), Disha Kasat (Right-handed Batter), Shreyanka Patil (All-rounder), Asha Shobana (All-rounder), Renuka Singh (Right-arm fast-medium bowler), Ellyse Perry (All-rounder), Sophie Molineux (Slow left-arm orthodox bowler)

The Capitals, boasting a power-packed batting line-up, seemed to be heading for a big total. Shafali Verma unleashed her explosive strokeplay, smashing boundaries at will. But then came the turning point! Enter Sophie Molineux, the left-arm spinner who deceived Verma with a cunning delivery, leading to a well-taken catch. This triggered a spectacular collapse, with Molineux, Shreyanka Patil, and Asha Shobana weaving a web of spin that choked the Capitals’ batters. The trio combined for a staggering 9 wickets for just 46 runs in a breathtaking spell, completely dismantling the opposition’s batting order.

While Molineux gets the credit for the initial breakthrough, it was Shreyanka Patil who emerged as the hero of the final. Despite playing with a hairline fracture, her fighting spirit and exceptional bowling skills shone through.  Her record-breaking four-wicket haul, including the crucial dismissal of Meg Lanning, not only put RCB firmly in control but also saw her crowned the Purple Cap holder for taking the most wickets (13) in the entire tournament! This feat is even more remarkable considering she missed a couple of games due to her injury. Shreyanka‘s resilience and exceptional talent throughout the season were undeniable, making her a deserving recipient of the Emerging Player of the Tournament award.

Chasing a modest target of 114, RCB openers Smriti Mandhana and Sophie Devine adopted a cautious approach. The experienced Ellyse Perry, who had already carved her name in WPL history by surpassing Meg Lanning‘s record for most runs in a season (347 vs. Lanning’s 345 in 2023), joined Mandhana after Devine‘s dismissal. Their composed batting ensured RCB cruised to victory with several overs to spare, securing their first-ever WPL championship.

RCB (W) has defied the odds, playing with grit and determination throughout the season. The contributions of Ellyse Perry, the record-breaking orange cap winner, Shreyanka Patil, the purple cap holder and deserving emerging player with her phenomenal bowling performance were instrumental in this historic win.

For the Delhi Capitals, it’s a heartbreaking end to their campaign, finishing runners-up for the second year in a row. But for RCB, the celebrations have just begun! They are the worthy WPL champions of 2024!
