The IPL is here, and this year some of the biggest stars are returning after missing last season for different reasons. Let’s see who’s back for another shot at glory!
Rishabh Pant
This young Indian player almost had to give up cricket after a bad car accident. But after 14 months of hard work, he’s back as captain of the Delhi Capitals! But we’ll have to see how Pant copes with the demands of batting, captaincy, and possibly wicketkeeping, in a rigorous IPL season after such a long time out of the game. Pant’s return will add firepower to the Capitals batting line-up, especially in the middle and death overs
Jasprit Bumrah
This super-fast bowler from India missed last year due to an injury. He’s back in peak form after taking wickets left and right in the recent test matches. He took 19 wickets in four Tests against England at an average of 16.89. His fast bowling can be a game-changer for Mumbai.
Shreyas Iyer
Shreyas Iyer had to sit out last season with a back issue. He’s a talented batsman, but he needs a strong IPL performance to prove himself again and potentially earn a spot back on the Indian national team.
Pat Cummins
This Australian all-rounder gave up playing in the IPL last year to focus on international cricket and it paid off! He ended up leading Australia to the World Test Championship title, retained the Ashes in England, and then won the ODI World Cup in India. Now, he’s the second-highest-paid player ever in the IPL and the new captain of the Sunrisers Hyderabad.
In his last season of IPL 2022, Cummins grabbed 7 wickets at an economy rate of 10.69.
Mitchell Starc
Another Australian bowler, Starc hasn’t played much recently, but everyone hopes his fast-bowling skills will shine for the Kolkata Knight Riders. After missing the last eight seasons, Starc returns to the IPL as its most expensive player ever. Bought by KKR for INR 24.75 crore, Starc’s last ODI was the 2023 World Cup final in November. Starc has played only two IPL seasons previously, for Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2014 and 2015.
Kane Williamson
This New Zealand batsman hurt his knee badly last season. Thankfully, he’s recovered and is ready to contribute his experience to the Gujarat Titans. They’ll need his experience to help their young captain. As Shubman Gill prepares for his first season as IPL captain, Williamson’s words would work wonders.
Jonny Bairstow
This English batsman missed last season with a leg injury he sustained in September 2022. Now, he’s back with the Punjab Kings after a long test series in India, which concluded in his 100th appearance in Tests for England in Dharamsala. Bairstow is known for his explosive batting style, exactly what Punjab needs to finally reach the playoffs! Scoring 253 runs at a strike rate of 144.57, though he averaged only 23 in IPL 2022, Bairstow remains an essential player in IPL.
