Most Runs Scored by an IPL Team In Last 5 Overs

The IPL is all about maximizing every opportunity. Whether it’s the powerplay overs with fielding restrictions or the final few overs where big hitters come out to play, every moment is crucial. Some teams, however, have become experts at capitalizing on the death overs, those last five of the innings, to rack up massive totals.

Royal Challengers Bangalore – 112 runs vs. Gujarat Lions (2016)

In a match against the Gujarat Lions that’s etched in memory, both Kohli and de Villiers scored centuries, propelling RCB to a mammoth 248 runs. Despite having a strong bowling line-up featuring Dwayne Bravo, Praveen Kumar, and Dhawal Kulkarni, the Gujarat Lions faltered in the death overs, leaking a record-breaking 112 runs. This remains the highest number of runs conceded by any team in the last five overs of an IPL match.

2016 was a golden year for RCB. Not only did they reach the finals, but fans witnessed a masterclass from Virat Kohli, who amassed a staggering 973 runs including four centuries in a single season! AB de Villiers also made some significant contributions with the bat.

Mumbai Indians – 96 runs vs. Delhi Capitals (2024)

MI has a long history of housing some serious power hitters. From Kieron Pollard and Thisara Perera to Hardik Pandya, and now Tim David, these players possess the ability to single-handedly demolish bowling attacks in the later stages of an innings.

Their recent clash against DC serves as a prime example. MI put up a staggering 234 runs, with a whopping 96 of those coming in the final five overs. Romario Shepherd unleashed his fury against Anrich Nortje in the death overs, scoring 32 runs. But the real hero was Tim David, who smashed a blistering 45 runs off just 21 deliveries.

Punjab Kings – 96 runs vs. Mumbai Indians (2023)

The Punjab Kings (PBKS) have shown significant improvement in recent years, boasting a strong batting and bowling lineup that can challenge even the toughest teams in the league. Their talent scouting has been impressive, with youngsters like Jitesh Sharma proving their mettle on the field.

During the 2023 season, both of their encounters against MI were nail-biting thrillers. In their first clash, Sam Curran and Jitesh Sharma took on a formidable bowling attack featuring Jofra Archer, Jason Behrendorff, and Cameron Green. The duo went berserk in the death overs, hammering a staggering 96 runs, including a whopping eight sixes, to secure the third spot on this list of death-overs domination.

These are just a few examples of how teams can capitalize on the final stages of an IPL innings. With the right strategy and powerful hitters at the crease, the death overs can completely change the course of a match, making them some of the most exciting moments in IPL history.
